Howdy all, Just wanted to share with you a new journey. I discovered on Sept. 11th that I have cancer and am currently undergoing chemo and radiation treatment. They have told me it is curable and that is what I am holding them to. This aside, I saw a re-run of a D-life TV show that covered how to deal with you diabetes during a hospital stay. It was the enlightenment that I didn't know I was going to need. It told me that I need to be very up front with one and all that I am an insulin dependent diabetic and that we need to work together to treat all of me. They also gave the heads up that steroids would raise your blood sugar so be aware. I was very open with every Dr. and nurse that had anything to do with my treatment plan and medications so we covered all our bases. The chemo scheduling nurse worked well with me and backed off the steroids by 75% to start for the first 2 treatments and being I have tolerated that well we will try the next with none. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING EVERYONE DO THIS!!! WORK WITH THE TEAM IN PLACE AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU!!! Just be aware that there can at times be options and some may work out better then others. But do not be afraid to ask!!!!! During Chemo treatments I take my own readings so I have a record on my own meter to take home with me. They also use a glucose mixture when doing the infusion. In my case they opted for saline. AGAIN, DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR OPTIONS!!! If I had not seen the D-Life show when I did I may not have been as pro-active with my diabetic care as I have tried to be. The Dr.'s and nurses have even thanked me for communicating the information and making sure they had it before they get started with treatment or medications. You can be your own best friend and representative in the case. Don't be afraid to speak out and up!! Thanks again D-Life for the info. at just the right time!!! With your help I am sure this is all going to be a success!!!
