Grr I'm feeling a bit frustrated this morning. I woke up with fairly good numbers (104), and then ate my usual breakfast of 1 cup Kashi (go lean crunch) cereal and 1 cup light plain silk soymilk. I like to eat cereal cause its yummy and it fills me up so that I only need a light snack inbetween breakfast and lunch. I know that cereal is kinda high in carbs (1 serving is 45g) but at the same time, when I talked to my dietitian bout it, she said that was a good choice of cereal because its soo high in fiber and protein.
I'm feeling frustrated because after an hr and a half after eating I checked my blood sugar again and it shot WAY up! 343 in fact. Normally after breakfast its somewhere in the 200 range, which is higher than I want, but not this bad! I took extra insulin and fixed it....but should I just not eat cereal for breakfast? Arrg I want to maintain normal blood sugar levels, and not jump all over the place. Tomorrow I'll try just eating eggs or something. Any suggestions on good/bad cereals? Thanks in advance for the help!

Hello Susie, Interesting question. I looked at the numbers for Kashi (go lean crunch) cereal on nutritionaldata.com. Their numbers for this product were:
Will1 cup (1 NLEA serving) (53g)
Total Carbohydrate 35.5 g
Dietary Fiber 8.6 g
which works out to be 31.2 g Net Carbohydrate
The soy milk is not included in this number.
Since you regularly eat this I wonder if there is another factor involved with the wild swing in your blood glucose numbers.
This is a short but not complete check list of possible culprits. I may ask questions that seem obvious. I am doing that for the sake of completeness.
1. What was the accuracy of measurement of portions?
2. Do you always test at the same time interval after eating? If not that will effect your readings.
3. Have you been under stress? remember that includes good stress such is exercise, some event that you are holding or attending. Bad stress includes early warning signs of the onset of illness or healing from an injury.
4. Trace contamination of hands, by not washing hands or not rinsing thoroughly after washing. Or using an alcohol based hand sanitizer before testing.
5 Could it have been a bad test strip or random meter error?
6 Did you rewash hands and retest?
7 have you tested meter accuracy with an unexpired test solution?
8 How many numbers have you had that were high in the past 2 weeks. Are over half in the the safe zone? If so this could be a fluke.
9 How many numbers have you had that were low (under 70) in the past 2 weeks. Are over half in the the safe zone? If so this could be an outlier anomaly.
A single high or low is not cause for worry. Our bodies can give us strange numbers from time to time that are out of range. They may alarm you. But if is an isolated random event it seldom a problem.
I hope that helps a bit.
As far as cereal choices I am an old school bran flake guy, they are cheap, low calorie, high fiber cereal with a fair amount of protein. And I like the taste of them as well.
Best wishes and better health. I hope I was of service.
