No T.J here. I eat yogurt more in summer. Vary according to what is on sale. at free with Splenda is best for me. Nancy

At least three times a week I enjoy Trader Joe's Apricot Mango Greek Yogurt with Granola. (Low fat . . . 140 calories). It's not overly sweet like the artificially sweetened yogurts and provides the added bonus of a little crunch! I eat it with my granddaughter's baby feeder spoon to make it last! In general, I use Greek yogurt for many things . . . sometimes to replace mayo in a salad dressing; sometimes to replace sour cream in all kinds of recipes. Everything from dips to desserts to salads to stroganoff! Fage and Chobani are excellent brands, and I like the Trader Joe's brand also. Greek yogurt is more dense and a bit more tart than the regular, which is why it works OK in savory dishes with things like scallions, or mushrooms, or chives. It's good on top of a low-carb tostada, or with Mexican spices stirred in. It's good with a salad of apples, cinnamon and all spice. (Try that one with almonds or other nuts!) Our food should taste good and a little Greek Yogurt stirred into a soup or sauce at the last minute (don't let it boil, or it will curdle!) adds a rich creaminess that we sometimes hanker for. Add it to a low carb smoothie by mixing in a packet of your favorite flavor Crystal Light (no kidding!) It's a wonder food. And my HgA1C is 6.2. (I have lung disease that requires oxygen, and take two kinds of insulin. But my diabetes is controlled IN SPITE of prednisone I require for my lungs! And I eat GOOD TASTING food.)

I stay away from full fat greek yogurt for a few reasons - My favorite is Fage Greek Yogurt. Sometimes as a treat I buy the full fat but mostly I get fat free. Full Fat. - Fat Free Calories 190 per 7oz - 90 calories calories from fat 90 - 0 Sat Fat 7g's - 0 Cholesterol 15mgs - 0 Calcium 10 % - 20% Even if it wasn't about the fat and caloires I would still get the fat free because the full fat has become my ice cream - I just love eating it and will eat more than I should. The fat free with a little splenda still taste great but is much easier for me to control the portion size. What ever I get I always add 2 table spoons of chia seeds to it and 1 table spoon of splenda.

LoveJoyHope - don't know what area you live in, but I really was not a fan of Greek yogurt the first couple of times I tried it. The tart, sour taste just didn't do it for me. But my local grocery store just started selling a store brand - I buy the full fat regular version of Wegmans Greek Yogurt, I stir in a little REAL vanilla extract (I got in Mexico) and I LOOOOOVVVVEEEE it. I usually stir it up and put it over fruit for breakfast. One Wegmans Greek Yogurt cup has 150 calories, 17 carbs, and 8 grams of fat. I love it with berries, either fresh or frozen. Its good with bananas too, but really ups the carb count.
Excellent advice there. Buy full-fat real Greek or Middle-Eastern yoghurt and use real vanilla extract or berries as flavouring.
I've been doing that for a few years now, often making my own yoghurt when I'm feeling energetic using a Greek yoghurt as the starter. After you've eaten real yoghurt for a while the other stuff tastes thin and insipid and over-sweet.

yeah, it's great if you can get used to the taste, I've been enjoying Fage with fresh, juicy peaches cut up--no extra sweetener needed. You can also try a sugar free snack with artificial sweetener and some vanilla extract (and for some crunch add some fiber1)

I've tried several brands of non-fat Greek yogurt and to me, Fage 0% tastes the best. I've never cooked with it, but I've used it as a substitute for sour cream in dips, on a baked potato, etc. I also use it to make a protein-rich smoothie with frozen strawberries. Chobani is ok, but it has a more sour taste than Fage. You can forget about the other brands because they have artificial fillers (fiber), colors, sweeteners. I use agave nectar to sweeten it if I need to.

For authentic Greek yogurt, stick with Chobani or Fage brands. I find that I cannot eat it as a substitute for the "regular" fat free yogurt I'm used to, because it is very thick and dense in texture. But to answer your actual question, in my opinion, the plain Fage 0% (fat free) has a taste and texture almost identical to sour cream (though I haven't actually used it as a substitute myself). My mother claims that if you stir one spoonful of sour cream into the greek yogurt, that makes the yogurt a perfect substitute for sour cream and you don't even notice the difference. Get a small tub and try it - it can't hurt to try!

Also, try Chobani. And, as has been mentioned, especially for the established American brands, really, really, read the labels on their new "greek" versions to make sure you know what you're getting.
