Hello everyone,

Thanks for all the great suggestions/pushes to see the Dr.  I did finally, on call doc that is, and she prescribed some antibiotics, a cream to help thin the skin and help it come to a head, and also told me to do hot compresses 3 times a day.  I started the treatment yesterday and so far nothing but I know it will take a little time.  It hurts so bad!!  I'm having a hard time moving around because it rubs on my clothing.  UHG!!!  The doc said it should be doing better within a week.  So hopefully it will start healing soon.  I have noticed a change and the redness is starting to go away.  I go in to see my regular doc next week on Tuesday so I'll let him know what happened.

Anyways, thanks again for your concern and help.

Hugs!!

Hi Carol,

I agree, the Dr. would be the best resource.  But I also wanted to add to check with some of the larger grocery/drug store chains in your area.  There are a few here that offer free anti-biotics and most recently I noticed free Diabetes drugs like Metformin.  Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Hi Carol,

As everyone suggested, "warm to the touch" is often a sign of a developing infection.  I hope that you did go to the doctor.  Please let us know how things turned out.  We are concerned.

Thank you everyone for your advice.  Im not running a fever, there are no streaks, it's not oozing, but it is warm to the touch.  I have been putting peroxide on it even though there is no hole.  the hole from the cannula closed up right away... probably from the swelling.  Sounds like the concensus is to go to the doc.  I'm sure they will let me pay later I just hate asking them to do that.  I know... it's better to have it taken care of than worrying about a copay.  Thankfully I do have insurance.  I don't know what I'd do without it!  the thing I worry about the most is that I've noticed lately things aren't healing as quickly as before so I probably should get in to the doctor.

Thanks again for your advice.

Blessings,

Carol

Are you running a fever? If so, I would definitely go to the emergency room (as pointed out above, that might be your best option for care if you are not financially able). Is the skin hot to touch? If so, go to the emergency room. Is it oozing? I would also go to the emergency room.

If it has red streaks radiating out from it, it could already be something serious. An infection can become septic, and spread through the blood stream. It is not something to mess with.

I am not a doctor, and I cannot see the wound, just go by your description. It may be nothing, and warm compresses may bring down the swelling; but from what you are describing, it seems it might be worth seeking expert advice.

It definately can be a very serious infection.  If you need to go to the ER.  They are required to see you and they can bill you.  Nancy is right on how to set up a "what if" plan if it happens again.  Maybe you can ask the office of the doctor you go to if you could see him/her and pay later.  I think mine would do that but he knows me well.

If there is heat on the spot you definitely have an infection.  I am sure someone could tell you how to get the swelling down but that might just cover up the problem right now.  Are you putting an antibiotic on it?  I would use alcohol first if I had to.  But I am not a medical professional by any means.

I am so sorry you are having financial problems.  So many of us are living from payday to payday.

First sorry to see you have this problem. But You need to get medical attention. If you do have an infection it could become more serious.Could your church assist you with some of the payment? Do you have a free clinic in your area? Could you call your diabetes educator and ask her what to do explaining you are low on funds. There are federally funded health clinics in rural areas that fees are a sliding scale. Could you make payment arrangements with your doctor . Hope you get the help you need. Nancy

Hello everybody,

This is embarrasing but I'm wondering if anyone has experieced this and what they did about it.  I inserted my infusion set for my insulin pump and within a few hours it was stinging.  Whether I touched it or not it hurt.  So I took it out and inserted at a new site (new infusion set of course).  Well the old stinging site got really swollen, red, hard, and hurts really bad.  It's probably the size of a quarter.  The skin around it is really sensitive as well.  I'm pretty sure it's an infection but I don't know what to do about it.  I don't have enough money to go to the doctor.

Anyone experience this before?  If so, what happened?

Blessings,
Carol
