I am not sure of the exact day in September, 1950 when I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in Olympia, Washington. I do remember sitting on my Mother's lap and hearing the diagnosis. The doctor told my Mom that I would have to go to the BIG hospital building up on the hill. The next day must have been Saturday, because I remember going out to the car and it was drizzly rain, but my Dad came around to my side of the car with a baloon on a string for me and I got in the car. From the beginning, my folks Loved me without reservation or "poor kathy's". For this I am very greatful.
Stuff was never a problem for my parents; essentials were met; especially Love. We were never without food, clothing, the house we lived in and when necessary a move so that I could walk to school (and Mom could also if there was an emergency). The moves were with great joy and anticipation. To this day, the place my husband and I live in is just a place to sleep, visit, share meals together, have friends and family stay, and share with those who happen to need an ear to hear, word to be spoken, or a bite to eat.
February 13, 2008, we celebrated our 43rd Anniversary of Marriage. Since October, 2007 my husband has been retired and is now available to share his time with myself and our five-year-old grandson after his morning kindergarden. We are active members in our fellowship of Christians at our local Assembly and around the area on a daily basis. We have birthed two children after a miscarriage 4 years after our marriage. Our daughter was born in 1970 through natural birthing and I was told I should have no more children - I was 25-years-old at the time. Since I just couldn't decide to have the tubiligation, Eight years later, sitting on the opposite side of the desk from the same OBGYN doctor he said, "You are 35-years-old. You have had diabetes 30 years. We can terminate this pregnancy." I responded with "No, we've waited a long time for this baby to come". God's plans are always the best, no matter what. Nine months later our son was born, healthy and well by cecerean section with my Endocrinologist standing in the open doorway of the surgical delivery room "just because".
Our daughter has been blessed with two boys 10-years-old and 5-years-old. On January 24, 2008, our son and his wife gave birth to our first granddaughter:). All of our children and their children are healthy and doing well in their physical, mental, and spiritual development as examples of God's grace in our lives.
First Corinthians 10:13 became real to me June 23, 1965 when God did what He said He would do. Since then the craving (as in sweetaholic) for sweets has not been a part of my life. The last 2 visits to my Dr. (Sept. 2007 Jan. 2008) my Dr. has repeated what He told me in May 2007 "Kathy, if I didn't know you, I would think there is nothing wrong with you. All your blood work (Cholestorol, Pressure, Liver, Kidneys, Heart, etc) are perfect." My yearly eye exam always brings the same astonished comments from the Dr. "There is nothing wrong with your eyes.... How long have you had diabetes?" When I reply 50+ (58 years this year:) they almost seem disappointed. My dentist says that my teeth are in good shape for ANYONE, especially a diabetic ("how do you do it?" he asks and I tell him that in October 1975 sugar went out of my life and only regular/nonsugared food is eaten and preferred by me.
By January 1980 approximately 10,950 insulin injections had entered my body. From January 1980 until Lantus came on the market in July of 200__ another approximate 7,365 insulin injections. Since i began taking Lantus at night and Novolog at meal times (making 4 injections a day) my legs and stomach still remain to be functioning sites of injections since that first shot in 1950.
If The LORD Jesus had not come to my rescue in 1975, I most likely would have been dead long ago because the desire for sugared goodies was so very strong in my life and I was unable to stop on my own. I Corinthians 10:13; take a look and see for your self that the LORD is good.
Thank you Julie and Copperhairpin for your encouraging comments of understanding. They really do mean a lot to me and I really appreciate them and you. Young children grow in so many ways so fast in such a short time. I'm very thankful that we all live in this time where "Skype" is available for in-time-conversations with in-time viewing each other!! God knows what HE is doing and for me the stretching seems to be well glued on one end (the other end is having a bit of difficulty releasing.
I had a blessing of spending time with a friend I met here on dLife! She treated me to a delicious lunch, and a wonderful afternoon of lounging in the pool and chatting! Yes, God is GOOD!

Hey Kathy, Sounds like you are having fun over there. How does the Visalis affect your blood sugar/insulin intake. I have had people approach me about the product, but I'm always skeptical because generally people selling the products have no clue about type 1. When I make regular smoothies with fruit and greens, I can generally get away without taking any additional insulin. I'm on the pump also.

So nice to see a post from you. It seems like it has been a very long time and I missed your blogs. I can't imagine using a pump but I cqan imagine you using one and it will get easier too with Jesus on your side! Sally

Thank you Copperhairpin and LC for you comments:) Today will be CHANGE day at 3pm, when i will ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO (because it's been 5 days since last CHANGE). I' not an admirer of wasting insulin and that's what's been happening on previous "CHANGE DAYS"; up to 30 units and that's costly even with insurance. Another cost that bother's me is the test strips which are not covered by my insurance as they were before because they come from the tester/pump company and not my pharmacy. I think...

On a Brighter Note, the mini watermelons in our area grocery store are DELICIOUS! WHAT A TREAT:)
Thank you for your encouragement Leeann. The "helper" has not been installed yet, waiting for them to call back to set up a time to come over here and show me how.
I still consider myself a newbie, but I was put on the pump after year 1. My current a1c is 6.2. I have an excellent Endocrinologist -he's heaven sent. :) I'm so happy that he suggested pump therapy so quick - I love it. It was an adjustment in the beginning, keep something close for lows as your body adjust. In the back of my mind, I am afraid of shots now. :) When I have to go that route, it takes me aback a bit. I think you will love your new sidekick. :)
I remember the first time I use my first meter. If it was filmed we could have put it on youtube. We face change daily. The important thing is to realise that today will be a thing of the past soon. you will each day get better and better using the pump, till one day you will wonder how you ever did with out one. I don't use Insulin. I believe that God gave all of us a gift called a mind. That gift helps us face change. As with all things some day will good and some bad. But change is normal our...

Which one did you get? I have Medtronics. I will give you a few words of advice -keep something with you for lows. I think it's pretty typical in the beginning as the body adjust to its newest addition. With myself and a few friends, I will say don't give up. We all wanted to just throw away the pump or politely pack it up and send it back within the first few weeks. I had 3 training sessions prior to beginning the pump, but it made me just want to cry out of frustration sometimes. Don't...

Thank you for your comment and so glad that you find deep meaning in dLife. TV can tell stories that make people feel things they may not ordinarily feel or want to feel and that is what we try to do at dLife. I was watching a documentary about when Magic Johnson got AIDS and he said something profound and I believe sincere, "God gave it to me because he knew I was strong enough to help others". And he immediately went to work doing just that.
I love how you live with God in your consciousness every day. It is a brand new day and we should rejoice in it. I hope you are having a good day with your diabetes also. Sally

This is posted on my bathroom wall, so I wake up to it every morning... Jeremiah 29:11 - 'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' Praying for your well-being.

Hi LC, thanks for your comment, and I do care for all my physicians past present and any that may come along in years to come. Last night my test was 201, but I took the normal Lantus as usual and this morning my first test of the day was 81 PRAISE The LORD! And now as I type this the sun is out from behind the clouds and BEAUTIFUL!! Happy St. Patrick's day my Friend!
There is an old story about busy man who sent doctor a bill for waiting to see him, based on what he billed his time out for. Like to do it one time. lol Norm
I made weight watchers cupcakes myself this weekend. I'm not a cook, it was just the pound cake mix and diet 7 up. Easy :) How the children enjoyed their treat!

You said 4.3 for type 2? That is wierd. My doctors are saying I am doing well to have 6.6. I am not type 1 but I care about you. I remember you have been having spells of low numbers for a while and you were going to talk to the doctor when you had your A1C results. Did you forget or change your mind? I wish I knew more about type 1. I know with my type 2 I would be questioning if I should be lowering my insulin. ONly a doctor can say though. Take care of yourself Kathy. You are a...

I am sorry you had such a rough day. I hope that it is more stable now. Lows are definitely difficult and I too hate that invasion of my well being. I have never known what "brittle" means. Could you take a minute to explain it to me? I have never had more than one low a day to deal with. Leaves me exhausted after one though for a while. You handle your lows very well and I never was able to stop from overcompensating. Gotta stay calm and do it right and you are a good example of that....

"Brittle" diabetes, also known as unstable diabetes or labile diabetes, is a term that was traditionally used to describe to dramatic and recurrent swings in glucose. I pulled that off a website, I think I heard somewhere that the term is not often used now. But I know that Brittle doesn't announce itself because it knows that we wouldn't let it into our space. :) I pray that my friend Kathy is having a better day. I know all to well the havoc that Brittle wreaks on our lives. Such a good thing that each day is different and allows us the opportunity to have a better tomorrow if today wasn't so desirable.
Even a little bit of exercise can make a difference in BG and how we feel! It's not just good for the body though - fresh air does wonders for the mind and soul :)
Today However has been a different story. My Thursday Grocery Shopping and Valentine Card Purchasing has been interrupted with 3 un-drivingable lows requiring 2 4 zo. Hi Kathy, I am so glad that you commented. I love your healthy life style. It is a good example for all of us. I am 68 and I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last July. I sent my blog up here. It becomes a problem with some of us. Leslie, I like to talk here to each other. It is more personal. Hi Copper, it does not matter if you are of age or not. You are welcome here. Ruth

LC is correct. Tags are search terms. So if you are talking about metformin in your post, you might want to add that tag so people who are interested in that drug can find your post. I do want to clarify that the tags are only relevant in our dLife community and will not be used in other search tools outside the dLife website. But a tag can be any word that helps others find your blog post. I hope that helps.
Thank you Kathy and I am honored that you will consider us as your friends. I am so very fond of you already from the personality and spunk that you show. You remind me that life and God is good. I feel so much joy and calmness when I read your words. I have sent a friend request to you. Sally

I am so glad that your health is so good. I have a A1C reading of 6.6 but my goal is to reach 6.4 and I will be happy I think. It is amazing about how you have been dealing successfully with diabetes type 1 since you were five years old. I know alot about treatment and testing has changed alot. I remember the very large needles and the large monitor he got after a while. Before then it was pretty general with those testing strips for urine samples I bet. copperhairpin thank you for your comments. I too remember the large stainless steel needles we used a wetting stone to sharpen and a thin metal wire to ream them out (clearing the skin, etc.) whatever clogged them before we boiled them and the glass syringe with plunger in a white-clothed kitchen strainer for 15 minutes before filling them with my NPH U-80 and Regular U-80 insulin. WHEW! That was a FULL sentence! Have a blessed day coperhairpin and LC:) God LOVES you and so do i:)
LC thank you so much for your comments to my recent post (which by the way isn't in regards to copperhairpin's blog post. LC just being reminded that we belong to God and HE LOVES us BIG TIME/ALL-THE-TIME is especially encouraging after all our calculations don't result in "Normal NONdiabetes" tests. Keep at it girl, HIS plans for you are still good, not to harm you but give you a hope AND A FUTURE with HIM:) PS: HE is the perfect husband:)
WOW Kathy, funny Jeremiah 29:11 is what I see every morning. :) It's posted in my bathroom in two places. Funny thing, at my last Diabetes seminar the speaker mentioned the word 'normal' and reminded us that we are normal, we just some time have blood sugars that non diabetics don't get. :)
Hi dmatrand, Your comments for Holiday Seasonal times of year are great and can be used whenever we dLifers are at a large gathering. During the holidays, my neice has always thought of me and either made a SF Gelatin Desert or a batch of Vanilla Butter Cookies which last the whole season! The amazing part is that never once have i asked her to do this, but it has encouraged me to do the same for others all through the year! Some times new friends surface when they learn I too have diabetes...

Thank you Zeneida and secondchances for your thoughts and encouragement. I'm glad you have enjoyed the photos i've shared. I'm sure you have some wonderful photos too. We now have about 17 inches with more on the way. Have a good night's sleep and we'll check-in in the morning:)
Beautiful pictures and I'm not a fan of snow. I'm here in the midwest and my issue is ice. I just don't like driving on it -I drive an SUV, but the way I see it...the bigger the vehicle, the bigger the magnitude of the slide. :) The downside of living in a hilly area.
Kathy, I love the length of your hair in this picture. I have been following you for a very long time and it is uplifting that you are always so joyful. I was at a stage where I only needed the sweetness that came from fruit and vegetables. Most do not have that level of taste but can. Carrots and corn are very sweet to me. I love the taste of sweet potatoes the most for its sweetness. My children and my grandchildren have always seen their grandma take a lot of pills in their lives....

My children and my grandchildren have always seen their grandma take a lot of pills in their lives. Maybe that is why it is so easy for my autistic grandson and son and his wife to take them. They also have known that grandma takes shots because of diabetes also.
I have always wondered if being diagnosed as a child was in its own way a blessing if one gets through childhood safely and with good health. Guess I will know the feelings between the diagnoses.
I look at diabetes as a blessing and a curse at times. I try to accept it as a blessing in its own way if I do my share and I depend on God to teach me positive life lessons from it. You are a good example of one that is very healthy and that is a gift from all the good care you have had in your lifetime. Maybe it continue.
Are you grandchildren regular grandchildren or great grandchildren? Either way I know they enrich your life as mine have enriched mine.
Each year grows better seeing my children and grandchildren progress through life.
Thank you Leola:) There's a song in my heart and every day is a gift, going for a walk now to keep the "Spring" in my step! God Loves dLifers and HE's our very present help in our time of need . . . my constant companion and Friend Who Loves to have me/us talk things over WITH HIM:)

Thank you Ilene, it's been a full day of fun, but now it's bed time and our youngest isn't too happy about it for the moment. Seems to me I remember his daddy needing to be put back to bed about three times when he was the same age. All's well. Hope you have a good night as well:)
