Like many of you, I don't always take my doctor's word as the end all, be all of my diabetes management. I consult my doctors about all kinds of issues and my medical team always has my best interests at heart, but there have been times that I've gone for a second, and a third, opinion in efforts to remain an educated patient.
So a few months ago, when I heard about the H1N1 flu and the vaccine that was being pushed out to the public, I was skeptical. I'll admit it.
BUT.
In the last four months, there have been some life developments for me that have changed the game - a lot. My health isn't just mine anymore. Because I'm now pregnant with my first child.
So when my doctors at the Joslin Pregnancy Clinic advised me to get both the seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 vaccine, I didn't object. Being a type 1 diabetic and pregnant, I now fall into two of the highest risk groups, and I need to do what's best for my baby and for my own health.
So yes, I got the shot. And no, I don't regret it. I know there are a lot of different opinions about this matter out there - believe me, I thought differently before I found out I was pregnant. But everyone's diabetes management methods vary, and we may not always agree with one another, but we do need to be respectful of what others are doing to best manage their health.
Here's to a healthy winter for us all!

Congratulations Kerri. I remember the days when a young woman with diabetes and her Dr. cried when they found out she was pregnant. How things have changed. This is a very special time for you and I wish you all the best. I experienced gestational diabetes with my last two pregs. I think I was also with the first, since she was born early and small. They are all healthy, strong, productive women today. They did not experience any major health problems throughout their life like the Drs warned.
SharonOf course, I followed the diet I was given and their directions to the letter, to which it sounds like you have dedicated yourself. During that time, I never noticed anything different, except I saw the Dr more frequently. Please don't let anyone scare you. You have it all under control.
I look forward to hearing about your experience and the birth of your child. Keep us informed. Sharon
