It's Wednesday already? Geez, this whole week is flying by!!
I wanted to let you guys know about the latest dLifeTV casting call, because they could be looking for some of US to feature on an upcoming episode of dLifeTV! Here are the details:
Have you ever had unrealistic expectations of yourself when it comes to treating your diabetes? Have you set yourself up for failure by trying to restrict yourself too dramatically (e.g., "I will never eat dessert again") or by setting unrealistic goals (e.g., "I'm losing 30 pounds this month")? If this sounds like something you've been through, dLifeTV would like to hear your story.
Clicking on that link will generate an email to the dLifeTV staff, but in case that link doesn't work in your browser, you can send an email to realstories (at) dLife (dot) com with the subject line "Real People, Real Stories."
(And if you haven't met Benno Schmidt, the new host of the show, stop by his community profile and give him a hello!)
I'll admit it - I had no idea that the clocks were changing this weekend. I happened to be conducting some overnight basal checks on Saturday night, and I was very surprised when the clock on my cell phone automatically adjusted to daylight savings time.
"What the heck???"
But then I did a quick Google search and saw that the clock were, indeed, springing ahead. Adjusting to the time change, diabetes-wise, has never been a big deal before, but this year, it was a little different. Because now, being pregnant and running with several different basal rate profiles on my insulin pump, every hour seems to matter.
I changed my pump and my meter (and my Dexcom) asap, but I did see a few spikes in my blood sugars (hard to tell what's causing what these days). Now, on day three of the time change, things seem to have settled down a bit.
I wonder if I would have noticed these changes if I wasn't following my numbers so closely these days? How about you guys - did the "springing ahead" affect your blood sugar control in any way, or did it just make you want to take a nice nap? :)
Happy Wednesday, dLifers! Spring is almost here, right? I wanted to direct your attention to a few things going on, in case you missed them when they whizzed by on the front page of our community here. :)
First off, the new dLifeTV host, Benno Schmidt, has joined the crew here and is sharing his thoughts on the new dLife episodes and his personal experiences with diabetes in his community blog. If you haven't said hello to Benno yet, please drop by his profile and give him a warm welcome to our community!
Secondly, there's a very cool diabetes design contest taking place outside of the dLife community, and the contest encourages people with diabetes - and the people who care about them - to craft up some creative ways of improving life with this disease. Details can be found in the dLife forum, or on the DiabetesMine blog. Check it out!
I know I've been there - when my blood sugar is low, I tend to inhale food. Inhale as in "Oh, it's three in the morning and I'm down to 45 mg/dl ... let's see how fast I can consume a whole box of Golden Grahams cereal! With milk!"
It's crazy how many calories my body feels the panicked need to ingest when I'm so low. It's like I feed the blood sugar, and then I have to feed the actual emotional landslide. All at once.
Viewpoints columnist Scott Johnson touches upon this very idea in his most recent column, "Too Much of a Good Thing." And I was wondering - how many of you guys are dealing with overeating when you're grappling with a nasty low blood sugar? Do you ever have trouble stopping the caloric consumption when you're feeling those low blood sugar symptoms?
Are you getting enough omega-3's? Reading about it in magazines and hearing about it from your doctors? Do you see "OMEGA-3 ENRICHED!" on the side of your food labels and are you, like me, scratching your head and saying, "Okay, why?"
Confused? You're not alone! Thankfully, Jack Challem, dLife contributing columnist, wrote up a great run-down on how to make sure you're getting your fill of fish oil benefits. Check it out and let me know if you gain some clarification on this topic!
