    Crazy BS numbers when sick

Wednesday, November 4, 2009, 03:41 PM EST [General]

3 Weeks ago I was diagnosed with bronchitis and a sinus infection.  For that amount of time, my numbers have been crazy!  No matter what I do, no matter what I eat, exercise, etc.......they just stay in the stupid range.  Type 2, 2000mg metformin daily, 4 mg amiryl (spelling, sorry), and 14 mg insulin daily.  Any suggestions other than just sleeping all day to try and control this?  Thanks.

Hello Mandi, illness and infections can seriously throw off your numbers. I have been fighting off an infection and a cold so I can relate to your frustration. In addition to the rise from the illness the stress that comes from getting bad numbers can cause your numbers to rise even higher. My numbers will be in flux for up to 10 days after I have healed.

In your post you were quite specific on your medication and dosage but vague on what your number were and when they were at that value. Have you discussed this with your doctor or anyone in your diabetes management team. I would be talking to them to see how I should proceed. There is no one size fits all solution. They need to help you get a handle on this as soon as possible.

I wish you well and a speedy recovery. Here's hoping that you can give us good news about your condition soon.
