    My Diabetes Story

I'm a moderator here in the diabetes community at dlife and a Viewpoints Columnist. You can catch my blog at www.diabetesmyway.org.

My diabetes journey started with a diagnosis of gestational diabetes 25 years ago, while pregnant with my first son. For seven years, I was able to avoid a diagnosis of type 2 with daily six-mile runs, but with a second pregnancy the gestational diabetes returned. In 1987, I was diagnosed with full-blown type 2, and started on a regimen of drugs, diet and exercise.

Over this time, as a freelance writer for magazines and the Web, I've had access to scientists and the latest research on diabetes – a perk that has proved both inspirational and frustrating: it’s one thing to know what to do, but it’s another thing to do it.

For me, every day is a second chance towards better care. I don’t always succeed, but I've given up on achieving perfection. If I give myself a second chance -- forgiving myself for that extra serving of cake or glass of wine, not stressing over a missed exercise class now and then – I’ve found I can better deal with everything from A1C’s to deadlines at work.

hay everyone, I am a 50 yr old male. I have been type 2 for about 10 years, I am not a big exerciser and I do try to watch what I eat, I am having a hard time trying to figure what I can and cant eat, I try the rabbit diet but not only is it expensive but boring. just looking for some advice, someone who is going through the same thing.
      Thanks Ed

Lol, Norm! I had plenty of dogs growing up, which is why I refuse to be a dogowner now. I feel your pain! It's funny. When you name your dog, you should think about it like you're naming your kid. Is it going to embarrass anyone at any time? Then rethink it! Glad you got your dog AND the unexpected workout. ;-)

I can definitely sympathize -- when my sugars are high or low I can be irritable for sure. But I also agree that you can't always blame diabetes for a mood swing -- sometimes it's just on you;)

I agree with Zeneida, Jo. Although I wasn't a primary caregiver for my late father, he also suffered from a number of diabetes-related issues late in life but had his own ideas about diet and exercise. It was pretty frustrating for those who loved him, but I agree with your thoughts on balancing our feelings with those of the person with diabetes. Your mom is lucky you are so involved.

Jo, thank you for sharing your thoughts and your emotions. I do feel empathy for you. I was one of the caregivers of my father who had dementia and diabetes. My sister and I had to give permission for the amputation of his leg. That was one of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life but there was no choice. There were really rough times, but you know as I do that we have to take it one day at a time. Wish there was more doctors out there that specialized in geriatric care. I feel so much...

WOW Kathy, funny Jeremiah 29:11 is what I see every morning. :) It's posted in my bathroom in two places. Funny thing, at my last Diabetes seminar the speaker mentioned the word 'normal' and reminded us that we are normal, we just some time have blood sugars that non diabetics don't get. :)

lol! Thank you, Sally, for your generous comment. I learned years ago just how much my husband does listen when we were dating and he would say things out of the blue or do things based on something I had said so long before that. I had to think how he knew and eventually it dawned on me that while he is short on words, he DOES hear every word I say - even if he doesn't always act like it. Of course this is also proof that he is as big a kid as the two we have, but that's another discussion....

I am so sorry that things are so difficult. At least your a1c is acceptable and you didn't gain alot of weight. That is good news. I am wondering if some of your meds can be changed to a generic? Alot of mine had to be changed because the formulary for my prescription plan changed. Sometimes you have to try for a alternative medication. You certainly can't do without meds and maybe this would lighten the load. Welcome to the club, Jeannette. :-) I'm sure you will find lots of support here for the various things you want to do. Just try not to overwhelm yourself with all the things you need to do. Literally take it one day at a time and you can make those changes you want to make. The perfect method involves bringing in help - someone(s) to help you plan meals and an exercise plan too - but perfect can be hard to do. Until you can make the plans you want, why not just make the best choices you can as...

Your definitely not alone. You will meet alot of other diabetics through this site and each one can teach you something or somehow touch you emotionally. It is hard when you don't have enough tangible support in the real world.

Thomas, this was delicious! I made it in my crockpot and without salt. In the last 20 min to 1/2 hour I added baby carrots and pearl onions. They both were frozen, so they really only needed to heat through. The chicken had great flavor and my family liked it very much. Thanks again for sharing.

Hi Tom, I feel like I didn't communicate well and I gave a bad impression. I am sorry and I definitely do not want you to be like me or follow the advice that I got from my doctor. We are all unique in our diabetes and what applies to one doesn't often apply precisely with another. I just meant that you were still in a safe zone when you said you were extremely high is all. I know it isn't a comfortable number for you personally. I know that I also want to be below 7. For the last two A1c's that...

You did nothing wrong Sally, nothing at all. I am sorry if the way I write made it seem like that. You are so right about us being unique. that is why I try never to tell others what to do but simply say what I do and let them take from that what ever may help. did I say my FBS was extremely high? if so that was wrong. I just feel it is high. I really hope you reach your goal of 6.4 but then again your 6.6 isnt bad either. Please never try to set your goals based on what I say especially with my...

I also did not enjoy the patty at all. today I hope to finally get the glucose tablets. Sally I have no idea why my numbers did that to me :(. after 8 years of defending doctors from on line doctor bashers, I can see how diabetics have lost faith. they gave me the quick acting insulin and the lantus - now I feel it is up to me to get my numbers down because their advice onhow to use it is goig to take way too long. I will explain about what is going on in a blog post. right now I am still way to angry to write it.

      Hi Nykaylla,
That's not how you figure out your blood glucose level. We we post our blood sugars, we have a meter and test strips to determine that. The average or A1C is a test done at the Doctor's office that determines your blood glucose over a 3 month period. I will have to find a chart tomorrow that shows the measurements for you. But I believe if I average 120-150, I'll get an A1C around 7. Don't quote, me it's late and I just noticed that this hadn't been answered. I will try and...

No, you're not crazy. You've just bought into the mistaken notion that magazines, TV and other media, including the "News" is anything other than entertainment.
You've made a mild complaint and a confession of confusion, here's a REAL rant:
After 15,000+ years, homosapiens is still version 1.0. The diet dejour is version what - 500? 5000? Doctors who didn't know what caused diabetes 40 years ago, promised a cure would be found within 10 years. Doctors who today still don't know are...

I saw this, too. If you're crazy then I am, too!
I can tell you that if I ate that sample breakfast, I would be off kilter with my numbers all day, especially if I started out anything higher than normal.
I'm type 2 and started on insulin and a pump within the last year. I need to lose about 150 lbs but would be thrilled to lose the fist 50.
